There are some things in life, which someday get dumped – whether it is the love of your life or if you are sober, your digital files. Windows provides us with a recycle bin which acts as a storage ground for our deleted files and we can restore accidentally deleted data. I’ve heard that wealthy people dump in the ‘trash can’, by the way.
People are reckless. They need the freedom to make mistakes.
But what if you accidentally delete something on your Android? Perhaps, Google hasn’t embraced the recycle bin like functionality but with ‘Dumpster for Android‘, a third party dev has. The app isn’t exactly new, but we thought that it’s underrated and deserves, even more, attention with the latest update.
The Interface and functionality
The interface is clean outright and lists the deleted data. It claims to restore almost any deleted data – including but not limited to the photo, videos, contacts, messages, apps and much more. We tested it with some pretty great results. You can either restore the content or delete them entirely from your phone. There are options for Auto-clean which delete the items in the bin after a specified time. It does not require root, but if you’re rooted, the developer says that you can benefit from lower memory consumption. The Pro version allows you to set a lock for added safety.
The updated interface has borrowed a translucent status bar and drawer arrow toggle in hamburger menu from Google’s design guidelines. It still doesn’t feature a floating action button, though. The developer says that they are working on a material design update, though.
But there’s a catch
There’s a difference between ‘restore’ and ‘recover’. Dumpster can only restore files which were deleted after it was installed. This renders it unusable if you want to recover something which had been deleted before it’s installation. If you are looking for ways to restore files, you are probably better off with a data recovery tool.
Overall, we find it as a useful extension for our Android devices. You may not be sober all the times leading to accidental data deletion. Download it now, be reckless and live life dangerously.
