Even after some evil steps by WhatsApp, there’s no denying that it has become the de-facto messaging app across multiple platforms. WhatsApp has always stood by its no ad policy and it prides on its business model of one year free service, followed by a meager $1 per year.
But here’s the cherry on the cake: It’s common to see WhatsApp automatically renewing WhatsApp for some users after one year thus making WhatsApp potentially free for life for many users leaving people puzzled why WhatsApp does not expire even after one year?
That Somebody’s are Indian Users
Not many people know this, but WhatsApp is free for undefined time for Indian users. This is not new news actually. But given the sheer number of questions that are shooted at us asking about WhatsApp automatically renewing, we decided to cover this story.
In November 2014, Neeraj Vohra, VP of WhatsApp, quoted that WhatsApp shall remain free for Indian users mainly due to lack of payment methods. He was cited saying that the penetration of Credit cards and debit cards are extremely low in India due to which Indian users are not able to buy the $1/year annual service.
Nobody knows how long WhatsApp intends to keep the service free for Indian users, but while you’re at it, Enjoy. If you are a user from another country and still have your WhatsApp service extended for free after one year, you might have just got lucky.
