Lately, Sony’s been the good guy on the block and has announced that the entire Xperia Z Series will be updated to Lollipop. Loyal fans have been excited since it was announced, but surprisingly, there haven’t been any major leaks of Sony’s material design update. So, we decided to do the hard work to satisfy the crave for all design nerds out there. Here are some of the design changes to expect when Sony starts rolling out Lollipop update later this month.
Icons get a flat makeover
Sony has been pushing circular, glossy icons since many years. With it’s Lollipop update, it seems like finally it’s icons are getting a makeover – and they seem to be flat this time. This seems to be evident from the latest Sony’s Walkman update. The circular icons still remain, but at least they do not have that shiny gloss and they are in line with Google’s icon guidelines for Android 5.0 Lollipop.
A fresh new Navigation bar
Since the navigation bar below is probably the most visible element and omnipresent on your Phone’s screen, it makes sense to replace the aging navigation bar with a brand new one.
This time, Sony takes a page from Android 5.0 Lollipop stock icons for back and multi-tasking button but manages to change the circular home button to something which actually looks like a home. Kudos to Sony on that.
A proper navigation using Hamburger
The three vertical lines in the top left in an app, popularly called the Hamburger, has been a subject to debate for quite a while, especially when Google itself was not sure of it’s implementation. With Lollipop, Google put some solid guidelines in place for the hamburger icon and Sony seems to comply with it’s new guidelines. The new hamburger icon seems inspired from iOS, but provides coherent navigation inside an app. It’s good to see that Sony is using the new Hamburger in it’s latest app update of Walkman and we expect Sony to use it in all of it’s app when it’s full Lollipop update rolls out.
Floating Action Buttons make an appearance
Introduced in Lollipop, FAB is a circular action button inside an app which is assigned to the most prominent action.
It has made an appearance is most of the Google’s apps and now screenshots of latest update of Sony’s Movie creator app suggests that Sony’s keen on adding them to. A little cosmetic entity like FAB displays the visual consistency when used in different apps and we expect Sony to continue the same trend.
So when can I have it?
It’s safe to assume that Sony’s new Lollipop upgrade will be a big cosmetic makeover which brings it’s visually similar to Stock Android. Not to forget, it’ll bring other Lollipop features like Priority mode, guest account, a new Android Run Time ART discarding the old Dalvik runtime and many other features. So when is Sony dropping the update on your device? If everything’s alright, it shall start rolling out for Xperia Z3 and Z2 later this February, followed by the entire Z series.
